What are Passkeys?

Passkeys are a modern, secure, and passwordless way to sign in to your Rise account. They replace the need to remember complex passwords (Rise Security Keys) by using the security features already built into your device.

Why use a Passkey?

Traditional passwords can be forgotten, stolen, or fished. Passkeys solve these problems by offering a superior level of protection:

  • Phishing Resistant: Unlike passwords, passkeys cannot be tricked into logging into a fake website. They are cryptographically linked specifically to the Rise platform.

  • Effortless Security: You don't need to create or memorize a complex string of characters.

  • Instant Access: Sign in using the same method you use to unlock your phone or computer—such as a fingerprint, face scan, or device PIN.

How do they work?

When you set up a passkey on Rise, your current device creates a unique digital credential. Instead of typing a password, your device (laptop, smartphone, or tablet) verifies your identity using:

  • Biometrics: FaceID, TouchID, or Windows Hello.

  • Device PIN: The code you use to unlock your screen.

  • Hardware Key: A physical security key like a YubiKey.

Types of Passkeys

Depending on how you prefer to manage your security, there are two ways passkeys behave:

1. Synced Passkeys These passkeys are backed up to your cloud account (such as iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, or 1Password).

  • Benefit: If you lose your device, you can still access your account from another device logged into the same cloud service. They synchronize automatically across your phone and laptop. You can check out these cloud providers for more information.

2. Device-Bound Passkeys These passkeys are stored strictly on the specific hardware where they were created (like a specific laptop or a physical security key).

  • Note: If you use this method, the passkey cannot be copied to another device. If you lose the device, you will need to perform a specific recovery process to regain access.

Passkeys on Rise V2

On the new Rise V2 platform, Passkeys replace the old "Rise Security Key" (password). You will no longer need to enter a separate security key to authorize withdrawals or changes—your Passkey handles both login and authorization securely.
