What's in a Recovery Kit
Your kit is a PDF with a one-time recovery code that looks like this:
RISE1-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX
Only you have it. The code is created on your device. Rise never sees it and can't send it to you again.
It works once. After you use it, you'll set up a new kit.
It's not enough on its own. Recovering also requires access to your email and your three security answers.
Where to keep it: in a password manager, or as a printed copy stored somewhere safe. Don't keep it only on the device that holds your passkey. If you lose that device, you'll lose the kit too.
How to set up your Recovery Kit
You'll need your current passkey. It takes about two minutes.
Go to Account → Security and find the Recovery Kit section.
Click Set up Recovery Kit.
Choose and answer three security questions, one from each category. Pick answers that you'll remember exactly, that others can't find online, and that won't change.
In the Connect your Rise Security Key window, click Continue and approve the passkey prompt. If your passkey is on your phone, scan the QR code your browser shows you.
Your Recovery Kit PDF downloads automatically. Save it right away.
When it's done, the Security page shows Recovery Kit created with today's date.
New to Rise?
You'll set up your Recovery Kit during sign-up, right after creating your passkey. If it doesn't work after a couple of tries, choose Continue without a kit and set it up later from Account → Security.
How to recover your RSK with your Recovery Kit
You'll need:
Your recovery code
Access to your registered email
Your three security answers
A device where you can create a new passkey
Follow these steps:
Sign in and go to Account → Security. Click Replace RSK.
Select Use my Recovery Kit.
Enter the verification code we email you. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder, then click Resend code.
Answer your three security questions.
Create your new passkey with Face ID, Touch ID, your device PIN, or a security key.
Enter your recovery code and click Recover.
Your new passkey now approves your withdrawals and account changes, and your old one stops working.
⚠️ You have 10 attempts in total to answer your security questions, and they don't reset over time. Capital letters and extra spaces don't matter. If an answer is wrong, you won't be told which one, to keep your account secure.
After recovering: set up a new kit
Your kit has now been used and no longer works. Go to Account → Security and click Set up Recovery Kit to create a new one. Your security questions carry over. Replace or destroy your old copy.
You can also click Regenerate Kit at any time, for example if someone may have seen your printed copy. Your previous code stops working immediately.
Using a Password Security Key instead of a passkey? You can't regenerate your kit from Security settings. To get a new one, replace your RSK, and a new kit is created as part of that process.
Frequently asked questions
I lost my Recovery Kit. Is my account at risk? No. Your account keeps working normally. Create a new kit from Account → Security, and your old code will stop working.
Can Rise send me my recovery code? No. Rise never sees your code, so we have no copy to send you. This keeps your kit safe, even from anyone inside Rise.
I forgot my security answers or used all 10 attempts. If you still have your passkey, go to Account → Security. There you can set new questions and create a new kit. If you no longer have your passkey, you can still recover through identity verification with the Rise team.
Someone has my printed kit. They can't use it without access to your email and your security answers. To be safe, regenerate your kit right away so their copy stops working.
Is the Recovery Kit mandatory? It isn't mandatory, but we strongly recommend it. Without one, losing your passkey means waiting for a manual identity review with your account paused.
