Why You Need to Disable Your VPN During Identity Verification

Learn why Rise requires you to turn off your VPN before completing identity verification, and what to do if you're still having trouble.

When setting up your Rise account, you may see a "VPN Detected" message during the identity verification step. This means our system has detected that you're connected to a VPN, which needs to be disabled before you can continue.

Why does Rise require this?

Our identity verification provider needs to accurately match your current location with the information you provided during onboarding. A VPN masks your real location and routes your connection through a different country or region, which can cause the verification to fail.

This is a security measure designed to protect you and ensure your identity is verified correctly — VPNs are not currently supported during this step of onboarding.

How to disable your VPN

  1. Open your VPN application on your device

  2. Disconnect or turn it off completely

  3. Go back to Rise and click "I Disabled My VPN"

  4. Your identity verification will continue normally

Still having trouble?

If you've disabled your VPN and are still experiencing issues with identity verification, here are a few more things to try:

  • Change your device or browser — sometimes compatibility issues can arise. Try using a different device or a different browser (e.g., Chrome instead of Firefox)

  • Switch your network — try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or vice versa

  • Try a computer — if you're using a mobile device, try completing this process on a computer instead

  • Try again later — if the issue still persists, we kindly request that you try again after a few hours

If you've tried these steps and are still experiencing issues, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
