This guide is for Payers and Account Admins managing payroll funding on Rise.
What Is a Cash Requirement?
A cash requirement is the total cost of running payroll for a given cycle. It includes everything Rise needs to collect from your account before payments can go out:
Employee gross pay — the full salary amount before deductions
Employer-side taxes — additional tax contributions you're responsible for as the employer (varies by country and state)
Benefits and deductions — any enrolled benefits, retirement contributions, or other withholdings
Variable compensation — signing bonuses, stipends, or one-time payments scheduled for that cycle
💡 Think of it this way: The cash requirement is what you owe Rise so Rise can pay your employees. It's always higher than the employee's net pay because it includes the employer's share of taxes and benefits on top.
Where to See Your Cash Requirements
You can view your cash requirements in two places:
1. Account Dashboard
Go to Dashboard in the left nav. The Total Payroll Requirement card at the top shows your total obligation for the selected time window (Next 7 Days or Next 30 Days), and whether your current balance covers it.
2. Funding Schedule
Below the Cash Requirement Flow chart, in the Payroll Dashboard, the Funding Schedule breaks down what's owed per cycle, in which currency, and by what date. Switch between Card and Table view for the format that works best for you.
How Cash Requirements Are Calculated
Rise calculates your cash requirement automatically based on:
Salary — the gross annual or hourly pay you entered when adding the employee
Pay schedule — bimonthly or weekly, which determines how the annual salary is divided per cycle
Start date — if an employee was added mid-cycle, Rise prorates their first payment automatically
Country and state — tax rates vary depending on where your employee is located
Variable compensation — any bonuses or stipends scheduled for that cycle
⚠️ Cash requirements update automatically when you add a new employee, change a salary, or add variable compensation. After submitting a Tax Declaration Form, updates typically appear within 4–5 minutes.
When Are Cash Requirements Due?
Cash requirements follow your payroll program's pay schedule. The key dates to know are:
Pay cycle start and end dates — the period your employees are being paid for
Funding due date — the deadline by which your Rise balance must cover the full requirement. This is shown on your Funding Schedule.
Pay date — when funds are distributed to your employees
💡 Tip: Switch the Payroll Dashboard time window to Next 30 Days to see upcoming requirements across multiple cycles at once and plan your funding in advance.
Cash Requirements Across Multiple Programs
If you run payroll in more than one country, each payroll program has its own separate cash requirement in its own currency:
US EOR — calculated in USD
UK EOR — calculated in GBP
Each currency has a dedicated account on Rise. Make sure you have sufficient balance in the correct currency for each program — having USD won't automatically cover a GBP requirement.
💡 Need to convert? Use the Convert Funds option on the Payroll Dashboard to swap between currencies and meet your obligations in each program.
Common Reasons Your Cash Requirement Changes
It's normal for your cash requirement to change between cycles. Here are the most common reasons:
New employee added — increases the total requirement from their start date
Mid-cycle addition — prorated amount for the first cycle, then full amount from the next
Signing bonus — adds a one-time amount to the first cycle only
Tax rate changes — state or federal tax adjustments can affect employer contributions
Employee termination — reduces the requirement from the next cycle onward
Variable compensation — one-time stipends or bonuses add to specific cycles
What Happens If You Don't Meet the Requirement?
If your balance doesn't cover the cash requirement by the funding due date:
Your Payroll Dashboard will show a funding shortfall
Payments to your employees may be delayed
Rise will not process payroll until the full requirement is funded
⚠️ Don't wait until the due date. Wire transfers can take 1–3 business days to arrive. Plan your deposits in advance to make sure funds land in your account on time.
