How to Set Up Your First Payroll Program

This guide is for Payers and Account Admins setting up payroll for the first time. Before your employees can be paid through Rise, you need to set up a payroll program for your team. This takes just a few minutes and only needs to be done once per team.

Step 1: Navigate to Payroll

  1. Make sure you are in the correct Team workspace (e.g. "Contractor Team" or "Payroll Team") — payroll is managed at the team level, not the organization level

  2. Click Payroll in the left-side navigation menu

If your team doesn't have a payroll program yet, you'll see a prompt to set one up.

Step 2: Select a Payroll Program

Click Set Up Payroll and choose the payroll program that matches your team's location and pay schedule. Available programs include:

  • United States EOR — for US-based employees, paid on a bimonthly or weekly schedule

  • United Kingdom EOR — for UK-based employees

💡 Tip: Each payroll program is tied to a specific country and currency. If you have employees in multiple countries, you'll need separate programs for each. Rise is working on multi-payroll program support — stay tuned.

Step 3: Review and Confirm

Before saving, click View to review the program details, including:

  • Currency and Country

  • Pay Schedule (bimonthly, weekly, etc.)

  • Due dates for each pay cycle

Once you're happy with the selection, click Continue to save the payroll program to your team.

Step 4: Add Employees to Payroll

With your payroll program set up, you can now add employees:

  1. Click Add Employee from the Payroll Dashboard

  1. Select the employee from the list — only team members in the correct country will appear

  2. Set their salary, start date, job title, and any additional compensation (signing bonus, stipends, etc.)

  3. Click Confirm to finalize

⚠️ Important: After being added, the employee will need to complete two steps before their first paycheck:

  • Fill out and submit their Tax Declaration Form

  • Sign their Employment Agreement

Cash requirements will update within a few minutes of these steps being completed.

What Happens Next?

Once your payroll program is active and employees are added, Rise takes care of the rest — calculating gross pay, taxes, and deductions automatically each cycle.

Your Payroll Dashboard will show:

  • Total cash requirement for the upcoming cycle

  • Whether your balance covers it (Payroll Covered ✅ or a funding shortfall ⚠️)

  • A breakdown by payroll program and currency

💡 Make sure your account is funded before the pay cycle due date. If your balance doesn't cover the requirement, visit Deposit or use Transfer Balance to top up.
