1099 Tax Forms: Eligibility and Distribution

As tax season approaches, many US-based contractors look for their Form 1099-NEC. At Rise, we automate this process to ensure compliance with IRS regulations. Use this guide to determine if you are eligible to receive a 1099 through our platform.

📋 Eligibility Criteria

To receive a 1099 from Rise, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. US Residency: Your Rise account must be registered with a United States address and a valid US Tax ID (SSN or ITIN).

  2. Individual/Sole Proprietor Status: We only issue 1099s to Individual accounts. We do not issue 1099s to Payees registered as Business accounts (e.g., Corporations or LLCs taxed as C or S corps).

  3. Earnings Threshold: You must have received more than $600 in total payments through the Rise platform within the calendar year.

🔍 Common Reasons You Might Not Receive a 1099

If you are searching for your tax form but cannot find it, it is likely due to one of the following:

  • International Status: If you are a contractor residing outside of the US, you do not receive a 1099. You may instead be responsible for your local tax filings based on your country’s regulations.

  • Earnings Below $600: If your total earnings on Rise for the year were $599.99 or less, a 1099 is not legally required.

  • Business Accounts: If you have onboarded your Rise account as a Business/Entity, the IRS generally does not require a 1099-NEC to be issued.

  • Outside Payments: Rise only reports payments processed through our platform. Any payments received outside of Rise will not be included in our calculations.

⚠️ Important Note

Rise provides these forms as a service based on the data provided in your profile. However, we do not provide professional tax or legal advice. We recommend consulting with a tax professional to understand your specific filing obligations.

Trouble Accessing Your Form?

One of the most common issues occurs when a user has updated their Tax ID but tries to use the new digits to open a form generated with old data.

  • The Mismatch Rule: If you registered with one Tax ID but have since obtained a new one, the PDF password remains the last 4 digits of the ID used at the time the form was generated. If those digits do not work, please try the digits from your previous Tax ID.

  • Requesting a Tax ID Update: If your Tax ID has legally changed and you need to update your Rise profile for future filings, please contact our Support Team at hello@riseworks.io

Verification Required: To update a Tax ID, we cannot simply take a text request. You must provide a valid, legal tax document (such as an SSN card or IRS letter) to verify the change. Our team will review the document before updating your profile to ensure compliance.
